Principal - Ms Katrina Dunne

That’s a Wrap!

Term 2 has been a whirlwind of events, learning and growing for our students and staff. As we reflect on the term that has been, I would like to acknowledge and express my appreciation of the unconditional extra that our families and community have contributed to our school this year. As I have wandered throughout the classrooms this week, the students in particular have expressed their excitement for the holiday break coming up. A holiday break will allow everyone to rest, reduce stress, reflect on academic progress, pursue personal interests and spend time with loved ones. I look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.

Please see our school’s Strategic Plan 2022 – 2024 for some holiday reading. If you have any suggestions and/or feedback, please share via email to: charleville@twb.catholic.edu.au

Learning Support News - Mrs Belinda Phillips

It’s been a busy but wonderful term in Learning Support.

Teachers have been collating evidence of the adjustments they are making in their planning and classroom management for their students. This evidence will be used for the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) to ensure all students receive the support they require to access learning. We have collated our data and sent this off. This data helps determine the level of funding the school receives which enables us to continue to provide the level of support our students receive both in and out of the classroom.

This term we have had some wonderful input from the inclusive education team at Toowoomba Catholic Schools. Our Preps had their vision and hearing screening completed through the School Readiness Program and I have begun conducting hearing screeners on various students across other year levels through the Sound Scouts program. Once I have completed this, results will be shared with the students’ teachers and parents.

Year 3 - Miss Katherine Spalding

Officially halfway through the year! What a busy term it has been. Lots of learning, in and out of the classroom. Here are some of the exciting ways we have been learning in the second half of this term…

Week Five:

Week Five tested our rhythmic skills with InRhythm Drumming group! It was a great experience to learn more about music from African cultures.

Week Six:

We were lucky enough to watch the talented performance from Shake and Stir. Their performance shared both traditional and modern retelling of fables.

In week six we were very proud of our prayer assembly presentation. We shared with the school what we have learnt about Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit can affect our lives.

Week Seven:

We took our learning to the playground in week seven to investigate how we measure the capacity of objects. We were able to connect that 1000mL makes 1L.

Week Eight:

In science this term, we have been investigating the effects of heat on melting and freezing objects. In week eight, we compared how the surface area of the chocolate effects how fast it melts. It was very tempting to not eat our experiment!

Week Ten:

As the term comes to an end, we are applying our inquiry skills as we investigate how we can build and code Lego Robots! We are learning how to use motion and tilt sensors to make our creations react appropriately to their environment.

Year 4 - Miss Taylor Morrison

WOW, how are we almost at the end of Term 2 already?! Time flies when you’re having fun 😊

Over the past few weeks in Year 4, we have been working hard to consolidate our learning from this term.

This term, students explored informative texts. After reading the ‘Illustrated Encylopaedia of Ugly Animals’ by Sami Bayly, students chose an animal and created their own fact file to add to our very own classroom encyclopaedia! How awesome did they turn out 😊

Throughout science this term, Year 4 investigated the properties of materials. Linking to design and technology, students planned and developed their own prototype of a package that could deliver a gift safely. We had so much fun creating these and most of all, testing their designs!

Recently we took part in Step into Stories with James Foley and National Simultaneous Storytime with Mr Pete! We had so much fun.

One of our favourite parts of this term was working with In Rhythm Drumming. We absolutely loved getting to express ourselves and can’t wait for them to come back to St Mary’s again.

Throughout this term we have had a strong focus on kindness and building each other up. We enjoyed working with Year 3 to write kind messages to each other and create chatterboxes. With our Year 1 buddies, we learnt all about 'Bucket Filling'.

Bucket-filling is a term used in education to refer to positive attitudes and behaviour. It relies on the analogy that every person carries with them an invisible bucket. This bucket contains a person's feelings and emotions. When the bucket is full, this represents us feeling happy and content, however, when it is empty, we feel low, upset and dissatisfied. Bucket-fillers are those who act in a way that fills another person's bucket and refers to those who practise kindness and positive behaviour.

Students have been working hard to ‘fill up each other’s buckets’ every day at school. Let’s encourage more of this next semester!

I am so immensely proud of the growth that our students have shown over Semester 1 and I thank you all for working with me to help them reach their potential. I am looking forward to finishing strong this term and returning in Semester 2 to share more opportunities of growth.

Enjoy your holidays everyone!

Until next time,

Miss Morrison and the Year 4 Crew.

Year 5/6 - Ms Amy Halliday

This term has been a fabulous time for our students. On a personal note, I have watched many of our children make huge gains in their academic and personal development. The hard work students have put in has been incredible. We have really developed our rigor and stamina for learning in preparation for high school life.

This term, we had more Science experiments where students were able to learn about states of matter, reversible and irreversible changes and solubility. Students enjoyed the hands-on activities and I hope to organise some more Science days in Term 3. This term has also seen some major fundraising efforts and we are very grateful for parent support to help raise money for our 5/6 camp.

We are not all work though, which you will see from our pictures. There are plenty of recreational and competitive pursuits students are involved in that bring balance and joy to their lives. We have many students celebrating sporting and creative success. We must have very proud parents!
